Joan Emily Sullivan, the beloved matriarch of her family, passed away peacefully with her family by her side on January 8, 2025, at Round Hill Care Home in Danville, California. She was 102 years old.

Joan was born in Toronto, Canada, to Richard Charles and Lily May Mann. She spent her early years in North Hollywood, where she graduated from North Hollywood High School before continuing her education at the University of Southern California. Joan’s career in medical administration spanned over 30 years, where her dedication and compassion left a lasting impact on all who worked with her.

Joan married Dr. John McGiff who pre-deceased her in 1978. She later married William Sullivan who also pre-deceased her in 1999.

She was a member of St. Isidore Catholic Church in Danville and an active participant in numerous community organizations, including the PTA, Catholic Charities, Vintage Wives, Castlewood Country Club, Sequoyah Country Club, and Danville Seniors. Her commitment to her family, faith, and community was unparalleled.

Joan will be remembered as a woman of remarkable warmth, intelligence, generosity, and a fun-loving spirit. She was a pillar of strength and security for her family, making each member feel deeply loved and valued. Her legacy of love, gratitude, and resilience will live on in all our hearts.

Joan is survived by five of her six beloved children, 13 cherished grandchildren, and 25 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in passing by her parents, Richard Charles and Lily May Mann, her late husbands, Dr. John McGiff and William Sullivan, and also her son John Joseph “Jack” McGiff.

Joan’s extraordinary life will be celebrated at a funeral mass held at St. Isidore Catholic Church on Friday, January 17th, at 10:30 AM, followed by reception. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Joan’s honor to the Dr. John McGiff Scholarship Fund, Peaceful Valley Donkey Rescue, or Hospice of the East Bay.

Her family and friends will forever cherish the memories of her warmth, wisdom, and unwavering love.
