Shirley Josephine Buschke

June 30, 1923 ~ October 17, 2019
Resided in:
Newark, California
Born in Illinois, Shirley came to Newark at age 2 when her father started work at the Wedgewood stove foundry and factory. She has been a part of Newark for 94 years. She loved this little town and watched it grow. She raised her family and Howard 'Doc' opened his dental practice here in town. They were married for nearly 71 years. She loved teaching and was the science teacher of thousands of Newark High students, as well as the Chair of the Science Department. She was tough but fair. She loved her community and was one of the original board members of Washington Township Hospital Development Corp. and served for 33 years. She was instrumental in bringing the Ohlone College campus to Newark. She was on the 1963 Citizens Advisory Committee that helped design the original City Hall building. She served on PTA, was a Scout den mother, and so much more. She was generous and giving. She loved cooking and gardening and had a longtime passion for jewelry making. She was a weekly Pilates enthusiast which kept her fit. She loved her family and will be missed by all! In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to your favorite charity in her memory.
I am so sorry to read of Shirley’s passing. I moved to Newark in the mid l940’s and Dr. Buschke was my dentist while growing up. I also worked for the school district for over 27 years so I had many interactions with Shirley. Even though I do not live in Newark now, I know Shirley will be missed by many. She was a wonderful person.
Working with Shirley in the Newark Unified School District was a pleasure. So true that she was tough, but fair. My sincere condolences to the family.
Shirley and I met when she joined the Board of Directors (I was secretary to the Board). She was always friendly, thoughtful, warm, and generous. I have a few pieces of jewelry that she made, one of them for my retirement from Washington Hospital. I always looked for her and Howard’s hobby display at the Alameda County Fair (with a blue ribbon attached, of course). She was a genuine human being. And there’s damn few of them! I shall miss seeing her at the Rock & Gem show. Knowing her made me a better person. My condolences to her family.
