Alan Kenney

Alan Kenney passed away on March 11, 2023 at the age of 85. Alan was born on June 11, 1937 to Austin and Muriel Kenney. He was born and raised in Massachusetts until the age of 11 when he moved to Fremont, CA in 1949.

Alan married his high school sweetheart Elaine on June 21, 1957 in Reno, NV. They were happily married until Elaine’s passing in June 2022. Alan is survived by his two sons, Michael Kenney and wife Liza of Fremont and John Kenney of Fremont. Alan is also survived by his brother Thomas and wife Patricia of Folsom, CA as well as many nieces and nephews.

Upon graduating from Washington High School in 1955 Alan joined the U.S. Navy rising to the rank of Storekeeper 2nd Class by the time of his discharge in 1959. Alan served aboard the U.S.S. General A.E. Anderson and the U.S.S. Regulus in the Pacific Fleet and several shore establishments.

Alan was a fan of the Oakland A’s and the Raiders, He was an avid reader, baker, and golfer. He enjoyed traveling across the country with Elaine in their RV, with their favorite stops being Pismo Beach, Reno, NV and Phoenix, AZ. He was a member of the Benevolent and protective order of the Elks. Alan was Elk of the year, officer of the year and Elk of the month on multiple occasions.

Alan worked for the Fremont Fire Department for 32 years from 1960-1992. He started his career as a fireman, worked his way to being captain in 1965, battalion chief in 1984 and finally to Deputy Chief in 1987 which he maintained until his retirement. Some say Kenney’s most notable contribution to the department has been his supervision of the opening and staffing of four new fire stations, the demolition of two others and the acquisition of 13 trucks and engines. But Kenney believes his greatest contribution was as a fire captain and training officer- when he trained dozens of young firefighters, some who later became captains and battalion chiefs.
In addition to his Fire Department service Alan coached youth athletics. From 1967 to 1975 he coached in Fremont Baseball Incorporated. In 1974-1975 Alan coached Football. Starting in 1975 and continuing until 1980 Alan coached Corpus Christi Basketball winning two championships. Coaching and guiding others both in the athletics and the Fire Department meant a lot to him.
