Alexander Andrew “Andy” Gervais, a lifelong Tri-City resident, was born May 4, 1990, in Fremont, California, to Joe and Dawn (Hoffschneider) Gervais. He died at his residence in Hayward, California, on July 28, 2026.
He was predeceased by his mother, Dawn; his grandparents Lois (Curtin) Gervais, Arthur Hoffschneider, and Elizabeth (Sandefur) Hoffschneider; and his uncle Don Anderson.
Andy is survived by his father, Joe Gervais; his stepmother, Susan (Pike) Gervais; his brother Jonathan Gervais (Leanna); his step-brothers Chad Romo (Wendy) and Travis Romo (Benji); his grandfather, Lou Gervais; his uncles Steve Gervais (Amanda) and Bill Gervais (Rose); his aunt Lin (Gervais) Anderson; his companion, Jenny Krauhs, and her daughter, Abby; and numerous cousins.
Alexander always wanted to win. Whether it was being the lucky caller who scored concert tickets from the radio, finding the next gaming system before anyone else, or tracking down a one-of-a-kind collectible, he had an uncanny ability to come out ahead. Luck seemed to follow him wherever he went, but those who knew him best understood it wasn’t just luck. Alexander was observant, clever, and knew exactly how to work a situation to his advantage. Even in his final years, he became known as a skilled negotiator, never afraid to advocate for what he wanted during house meetings. His quick mind and remarkable memory invoked comparisons to Rain Man.
There was, however, one pursuit where success seemed to elude him: fishing. Yet no lack of catches ever diminished his love for it. If there was an opportunity to cast a line, Alexander was eager to take it. Some of his fondest moments were simply spent by the water, enjoying the peace that fishing brought. His brother still laughs when he recalls their childhood fishing trip with their dad—Jonathan, armed with a Mickey Mouse fishing pole, accidentally hooked Andy instead of a fish during an errant cast. That story became part of their family’s treasured collection of memories and Jonathan’s largest catch ever.
Alexander’s love of adventure began early. As a child, he enjoyed camping beneath the towering redwoods of the Santa Cruz Mountains, collecting bones while watching his parents race cars, and setting out on family road trips—provided the destination met his approval. He had a mind of his own, a sharp wit, and an unmistakable enthusiasm for the things he loved. He also loved dogs throughout his life and most recently enjoyed the companionship of his dog, Jake.
Alexander lived life on his own terms, pursuing what brought him joy with determination, humor, and an enduring sense of optimism. His stories, laughter, and unique way of seeing the world will remain with those who knew and loved him. Though he is deeply missed, the memories he leaves behind continue to bring smiles, laughter, and gratitude for the time shared with him.
A celebration of life will be announced at a later date. He will be interred beside his mother at Mountain View Cemetery in Oakland
