Born in: Oakland, California
Resided in: Fremont, California

Barbara Jenkins, a 40+ year resident of Fremont, CA, passed away suddenly on October 15, 2024 at the age of 78.  Barbara was born in Oakland, CA to Edward and Sara Bush.

Barbara graduated in 1964 from Tennyson High School in Hayward, CA. Immediately after graduation, she moved to Washington DC to begin her professional career as an executive assistant. While living on the East Coast, she met her future husband, Wilbur E. Jenkins, and Silver Spring, MD became her new home.  After her marriage of 11 years ended, she returned to her native CA, where she worked for 30 years as a Human Resource Manager for several technology companies before her retirement.

Barbara was a strong advocate for women, equal rights, education, and personal and professional development. Her involvement in the American Business Women’s Association (ABWA) became an important part of her life. Barbara encouraged independence and sharing of opinions and perspectives.  She was also active in the Fremont Chamber of Commerce, One Child, and other local organizations.

Barbara was an avid golfer, enjoying golfing with her women’s clubs, and golf vacations with friends.  She loved the SF 49ers, SF Giants, and Golden State Warriors, supported other Bay Area professional and college sports teams, and would not hesitate to vocalize her excitement (or frustration) with plays and final results.

Barbara will be remembered by her family and friends for her warmth and compassion, her tenacity, the guidance she offered to others, and her overall love of life.  She will be remembered lovingly by everyone whose life she touched.

Barbara is survived by her loving sisters, Donna and Laura Bush, Robin (Steve) Sawamura and her two nephews, Scott and Brian Sawamura.  She is predeceased by parents Edward and Sara Bush, and brothers Keith and David Bush.

A celebration of life will be held on November 22, 2024 at Spin A Yarn Steakhouse, 45915 Warm Springs Blvd., Fremont, CA 94539. In memory of Barbara, contributions can be made to the Stephen Bufton Memorial Educational Fund at www.sbmef.org. SBMEF grants and scholarships provide females with funds for post-secondary education and ongoing professional development.

  1. CandleDear Barbara,
You will be with us forever. The memories will last a lifetime. Miss you so much already. Rest in peace, big sister.
    Robin

  2. You left us so unexpectedly and way too soon my dear sister. Words cannot express the loss I feel with your passing. I will continue to always look up to you as you will forever remain in my heart. I love you. Donna

  3. You were such an integral part of your family. You will be missed by all that had the honor to know you. I have fond memories of our trip to Italy. We shared many laughs. RIP

  4. CandleIt is impossible to believe that such a strong, vibrant, and compassionate woman has left us. Barbara was always there for me at the many tournaments with the West Valley Ladies Golf Club! She ran everything, either as a leader or behind the scenes as support. I will miss her greatly but I’ll never forget her! Rest in Peace, dear friend Barbara. You’ll always be on the putting course with me saying, “do you have a flat one?” Love, Dana

  5. CandleBarbara was an amazing friend, and although she was going through some difficult times herself, she kept in touch with me as I went through hospice and the eventual loss of my husband earlier this year.
Barbara was an inspiration to everyone she met, a strong independent individual with an amazing sense of understanding and compassion.
Rest in peace my dear friend, love Gillian x

  6. CandleI’ve known Barbara for 30 years. We shared a passion for fashion and helping other women. Barbara was so supportive and she was always there if you needed her. I will miss her and treasure the friendship we shared! RIP Sweet Lady!

  7. CandleBarbara was a woman of action. She would take on a project or problem and move forward quickly. Barbara was most helpful to me when I was treasurer for Pathfinder Chapter. Always willing to go the extra mile. I found her to be a good communicator too. Her smile and laughter came quickly, always reaching out to say hello to a new person. Introduce herself and then find out about the other person. Definitely a people person.

Barbara, you are missed and will be remembered. May the work and activities you were so found of continue in your name. I have so many good memories and will continue to treasure your memory.
