Bernadette Gallagher Attletweed

Bernadette peacefully passed at home surrounded by her family. She was born to Alice Graham and James Henry Gallagher in New Haven Connecticut on March 15, 1928. In 1945, Bernadette graduated from the America School for the Deaf and would later graduate from Gallaudet University in 1951. After college, Bernadette went on to work at West Pennsylvania School for the Deaf and eventually moved to California. Here, she married her late husband George Orville Attletweed. They married on December 27, 1958. George and Bernadette would adopt two loving children, Kathleen Alice Thora Attletweed (Strawn) aka Kata and the late Olaf Lawrence Attletweed, aka Larry. She spent her time here, working at the California School for the Deaf, both in Berkeley and Fremont, for 31 years and retired in 1991. Bernadette was always active within the deaf community, especially with her role in setting up Fremont Oak Gardens, a Deaf Senior Independent Living Housing. She was also active with St. Joseph's Center for the Deaf. Bernadette will be greatly missed by her grandchildren, George and Alicia Strawn, Lauren, Olaf and Verlinna Attletweed. Along with, nephew, Lawrence and Michael Richards and nieces, Karen Larson and Sharyn Budek. Her son-in-law, Kirk Strawn along with many other family members will greatly miss her. Family and friends are invited to attend a visitation on Thursday, July 23, 2015 from 4:00 – 8:00 P.M. with a 7:00 P.M. vigil at Berge-Pappas-Smith Chapel of the Angels, 40842 Fremont Blvd., Fremont, CA. An 11:00 A.M. Mass of Resurrection will be held on Friday, July 24, 2015 at St. Joseph Church, 43148 Mission Boulevard, Fremont, CA. There will be potluck following after the burial at St. Joseph Center for the Deaf at 25580 Campus Dr., Hayward.
