Flossie Bell Pennington
May 26, 1921 ~ March 14, 2013
Resided in:
Fremont, CA
Flossie went to join her loved ones in heaven on March 14, 2013. She was 91 years old, and very pleased to share that news with everyone. She was born to John and Della Conley on May 26, 1921, in Council Grove, Kansas.
Her family often moved, due to her father's job as road master with the railroad. Eventually her family moved to Claremore, Oklahoma, where Flossie spent her early adult years. She proudly shared her memories of supporting the war effort, while living in Claremore. She and several friends commuted to Tulsa, Oklahoma to work in the Douglas Aircraft plant, building B-24 Liberators. They were part of the 'Rosie the Riveters' force.
It was while living in Tulsa that Flossie met her love, Doyle Pennington, her 'Army Guy', at a 4th of July dance. They married while he was on leave from his tour as part of the occupation forces in Japan.
Upon Doyle's discharge, he, Flossie, and Flossie's daughter, Patricia, moved to Irvington, California, her home for the next 67 years. She often reminisced about early Irvington and how there was only one stoplight in town, when she arrived.
Flossie was known and loved for her great sense of humor, an ace at delivering one-liners and great stories. We will miss the big smile which lit up her face. Homemaking was what Flossie was all about. Her sewing, knitting and crocheted projects will remind us of her talents for many years to come. It seems that she always had a pie or batch cookies baking. Gardening was another interest of Flossie's, who had a green thumb and magic water which would nurture even the sickest of plants back to health. Sharing the fruits of her labor was Flossie's way of showing her love for family and friends.
A strong woman, with a 'Can-do Spirit', Flossie worked outside the home, when the concept was new and not totally acceptable. She was an original Avon Lady and caregiver for her nephew and niece. As her children grew, she worked outside the home at Leach's 5¢€šµ and 10¢€šµ, Wes Sear's Dept. Store and Capwell's. At Capwell's she was an award winning sales representative. Flossie was able to balance work and family well, being an active member of the PTA and Girl Scouts.
Flossie is predeceased by her loving husband Doyle, her sister Nadine Howard, brother Roy (whose death preceded Flossie's birth), and parents. She is survived by her daughters, Patricia Pennington, Louanna Kimball (Bill) and Phyllis Ronhaar (Larry); grandchildren Aaron (Erin) and Ian Kimball (Kilianne) and Susan Ronhaar (Zachary), 5 great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Also surviving Flossie is her beloved Yorkshire Terrier, Missy, who has been her constant companion for more than 15 years.
The family would like to thank the wonderful, supportive neighbors and caregivers who lovingly watched over and cared for Flossie, allowing her to remain in her home, as she had wished.
In honoring Flossie's request, there will be no services for her.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial gifts be made to a favorite charity.
