Joan Fong 1957-2017 Joan Chen Fong, age 59, died peacefully in her sleep at home in Fremont, California, after living a life compressed with joy from God while battling advanced stage IV lung cancer for 45 months. Joan was a warm-hearted, joyful, kind, dedicated and generous person with a beaming smile that radiated her faith in God that we will never forget. A Celebration of Life service will be held Wednesday, August 30, 2017, at 1:30 p.m. at Centerville Presbyterian Church, 4360 Central Avenue, Fremont, California 94536. She will be interned at Greenlawn Memorial Park in Colma, California. 'Joan would want all of us to continue to live the life compressed with joy! 2 Timothy 4:7 says, 'I have fought a good fight, I have finished the race, and I have kept the faith' And she would want you to accept Jesus so that she can see you on the other side! Our journal at www.caringbridge.org/public/joanfong chronicled her faithful inspiring battle with lung cancer. Joan is a Bay Area native, graduating from Buchner High School; the University of California - Berkeley with a double B.S. in Bacteriology and Genetics; and Cal State-Hayward with an MBA. Joan worked in finance, insurance, computers (Sun Microsystems) and biopharmaceuticals (Syva) before retiring early from the Jack Lee Fong Insurance Agency after being diagnosed with lung cancer from a genetic mutation common in Asian female never-smokers. She never smoked. Anyone can get lung cancer if they have lungs. Joan extensively volunteered and supported many organizations working in the performing arts, children education and Christian work at the local, regional and national levels using her gift of financial acumen and discernment. Her service to others which included being Alameda County Library Foundation Chair, Sunday School teacher, Marching Band Volunteer, Bible Study Leader, Founding Director Pan Pacific Bank, Chair of the National Asian Presbyterian Women, Insurance Agent, Board Member of The Insurance Board, Crab Feed Chair, Synod Permanent Judicial Commission, Vice Chair Synod of the Pacific, Asian American Christian Fellowship, PC(USA) General Assembly committees, Dollars for Scholars Committee, Presbyterian Historical Society Board, Finance & Property Chair San Francisco Presbytery, Board Director Mission San Jose High School Parents of Universal Performers, Chair of Loans of the Mission Development Resources Committee of the PC(USA) and a member of Irvington Presbyterian Church. Joan is survived by her husband of 32 years Ronnie Fong, sons Alexander, Theodore, and Nicholas; mother Helen Chen, and siblings Velma, Louise and Jim. She is preceded in death by her father C.T. Chen. The family would like to thank everyone for their support, well wishes, and prayers. The list of people she impacted and influenced is vast and the love has been overwhelming.
