Resided in: San Luis Obispo, California

There are people that come into our lives and just pass through. Others come into our lives and leave lasting impressions. That is who John Edward Mason was – a “difference maker.” John’s kindness, sense of humor, contagious laugh, and ability to forgive are just a few of the traits that made John the special man that he was.

John was born February 19, 1960 to James and Vivian Mason at Washington Township Hospital in Fremont, CA. He grew up surrounded by a loving family and supportive friends. John overcame a childhood disease of Ewing Sarcoma. He always contributed his cancer survival to Byron Smith, MD.

John moved from Fremont to Atascadero, CA in his 20’s; in 2006 he moved to San Luis Obispo where he made his life at Conway/XPO Logistics. There he made lifelong friends whom he cherished. Over the course of his life, John nurtured and loved eight rescue dogs. His devotion to his dogs was unmatched, treating them to daily bike runs and endless love. John was a proud member of Raider Nation, a NASCAR follower and an Oakland A’s fan.

John will forever live in the hearts of his mother Vivian, sister Kam, brother-in law Rick Lawrence, niece Katie Lawrence Knoeppel, nephew Jonathan Lawrence and their spouses Todd Knoeppel and Laura Lawrence. He has three great nephews, Tyler, Trent and Jack and two great nieces, Faith and Madeline. He is also survived by the cousins he shared many laughs with. In SLO county, he has left behind members of the Nott and Byrum families.

Preceding him in death are his father James Mason and brother James “Jimi” Mason Jr. In lieu of flowers, John’s family is requesting donations to be made in John’s name to your local humane society.

Memorial Mass will be held at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church on March 8th, 2025 @ 12:00PM. Reception to follow.

  1. CandleMrs. Mason, Kam and family, I’m thinking of you and sending my sincere condolences. May you find peace and comfort in the love of those around you

  2. CandleMy heart hurts. I met John at the beach. We shared time throwing the ball for our dogs and laughing about life events. He is the only man I know who could ride a bike with one good leg while running three dogs! We discussed many things during our hours at the beach. I will treasure the time I spent with him. He was such a good guy! My heart goes out to his family and those he poured his life into.
