March 10, 1934 ~ February 13, 2023

Born in: Liverpool, England
Resided in: Fremont, California

John Gordon Richards passed away at home on Monday, February 13, 2023 at the age of 88.  He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Margaret, his son, Steven and his daughters Sandra (Robert) and Kerry (Craig) and his 5 grandchildren Trevor, McKenna, Amanda, Olivia and Gavin.

Born in Liverpool, England, to Thomas and Isabella Richards, he immigrated to the United States to be near his sister, Marie, and then joined the U.S. Air Force.  On one of his trips to England, he met the love of his life, Margaret. John proudly served as an air traffic controller for 22 years and retired as a Master Sergeant.

John was a passionate, lifelong fan of soccer.  He played in leagues in England, his Air Force bases’ teams and in the Bay Area “Saturday Stumblers” over 50 soccer club.  He helped spread his love of the game by assistant coaching at Irvington High School and the Cobras travel team, as well as refereeing for local leagues. He continued to support Liverpool to the end.

John loved to travel and after retiring bought a caravan in Caernarfon, Wales, where he and Margaret frequently traveled to visit family and friends in England and Wales.  He instilled his love of travel and adventures in his family.

John will be remembered as a loving husband, a dedicated father, a fun-loving grandfather “Poppa” and a staunch supporter of the Liverpool Football Club.  A memorial service will be held at Berge Pappas Smith Chapel of the Angels at 40842 Fremont Blvd, Fremont on Thursday, February 23 at 1:30 pm.  John will be greatly missed by friends and family at home and abroad.

The family would like to thank Hospice for their caring support over the last few months.  While flowers are welcome, donations to Hospice are also appreciated.
