In Loving Memory of Josephine Catherine (Chavez) Mendez

Josephine “Josie” lived a life defined by love, compassion, and quiet strength. She passed away peacefully at the age of 88, leaving behind a legacy that will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
A lifelong Californian, Josie spent her final years in Livermore, surrounded by family and the community she cherished. She was one of eight children and was blessed with a close-knit family. She shared a special bond with her beloved sister, Sarah, and her loving brothers, Frank, Ralph, Louie, Chris, Roy, and Albert. Raised in a home filled with kindness, laughter, and unwavering love, Josie carried those same values with her throughout every chapter of her life.

Above all else, Josie was devoted to her family. She was an extraordinarily compassionate and nurturing mother to her children, Jon, Ann, and Chris. Her love knew no limits, and she found her greatest joy in caring for those around her. As a grandmother to Emily, Aria, Isla, Finn, and Brody, she created magical memories that will be treasured forever. Her grandchildren knew her as a source of unconditional love, warmth, encouragement, and endless hugs.
One of Josie’s greatest gifts was her remarkable ability to make every person she met feel truly seen and valued. Whether you had known her for years or had just met her, she had a way of making you feel like the most important person in the room. Her gentle smile, attentive heart, and genuine interest in others brought comfort to countless lives.

After dedicating herself to raising her family, Josie found her calling in education, where she worked with children who faced learning and personal challenges. It was a role perfectly suited to her compassionate nature. She possessed a rare ability to recognize the potential in every child, helping them discover confidence they didn’t know they had. Through her patience, encouragement, and unwavering belief in others, she inspired countless young people to believe in themselves—lessons that remained with them long after they left her classroom.

Josie will be remembered not only for what she did, but for how she made people feel: loved, accepted, encouraged, and safe. Her kindness was effortless, her generosity was constant, and her heart was immeasurable.
Though her physical presence is no longer with us, the love she shared, the lives she touched, and the example she set will continue to shine through her family, friends, former students, and all who were fortunate enough to know her.
She will be deeply missed, forever loved, and always remembered.

  1. CandleShe is one of the most caring people I had the pleasure to work with in the classroom. Everyone loved her wit, compassion and her warmth to the many students and staff who adored her. Rest in peace my dear friend, you have certainly earned it, and we ALL have benefited from her love that she showed all of us. Oh yeah, say hello to Pepe for me. Your family has always been part of my family since we met. My condolences to you all.
Love, Charlie and Sandy Marotta and our families.
