Joyce Wallace passed quietly after a short illness on May 24,2022 at the age of eighty-six. A lifelong resident of Fremont, she was born in San Jose to Mary George and Raymond Rodrigues. She was a graduate of Washington High School and San Jose State University, where she was a member of Delta Zeta sorority.  Joyce taught in Fremont elementary schools from the late 1950s to 1970. Joyce married Vincent Wallace in 1959l. They were married for sixty-one years before Vince passed away in 2020. They had two daughters, Marijayne Wallace Stegman (Edward) and Tricia Wallace Betts (Bradley) and three grandchildren Neo Stegman, Molly Betts, and Kenneth Betts.

Joyce was a lifelong volunteer having spent time supporting the PTA, the American Association of University Women, and Holy Spirit Church. She was a thirty-five-year volunteer for the Washington Hospital Foundation having given over sixteen thousand hours of her time organizing events and managing the hospital gift shop. She helped with multiple class reunion efforts for the Washington High class of 1953.

An avid tennis player, many remember Joyce sporting her tennis gear while running errands around town in her convertible white Mustang. Joyce played in many different bridge groups both individually and with Vince. She loved a good game of solitaire, dominoes, Qwirkle, Yahtzee and Uno, all of which were enjoyed with family during the annual family vacation at Lake Tahoe.

Joyce and Vince had an extensive group of friends with whom they would travel and celebrate birthdays and special occasions. During the pandemic, she and other friends created a bubble that allowed them to get together to play Rummikub and to socialize.

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. Joyce was a warm, caring person who was a pleasure to know. I had knew her when I volunteered with her at Washington Hospital and always enjoyed seeing her and working with her. She will be missed and remember by many.

  2. I was saddened to hear of Joyce Wallace‘s death, as she was so vibrant and lovely and such a high energy gal. I volunteered with her in the Washing hospital gift shop on our gift shop team, and we had lots of fun and did lots of work and made lots of money for the hospital. Rest in peace, dear Joyce.💖

  3. Joyce was the first friend I had in Fremont when she returned from her honeymoon and moved in next door at the Glenmoor apartments. We were very close for many years and she had a tremendous impact on my life. She and Vince traveled with us and shared our lives and family. I will truly miss her.

  4. It was an absolutely pleasure meeting Joyce and she glowed with the love she had for her daughters and grand children. She will be missed.

  5. CandleIt crushed me to find out that Joyce is no longer with us, but in spirit only. She was truly a remarkable person of high quality. She was very patient and understanding and had a top-notch personality. What I loved about her was her great sense of humor. We laughed together often while we counted money; stitched and stuffed our crafts; went to mountain concerts; held a hand of cards, or just talked on the phone. She was a bright ray of light & I will definitely miss her.
