Penelope (Penny) Karlin, 48, passed away June 17, 2013 in Kaiser Hospital Sacramento, following brain surgery resulting from complications of a sinus/ear infection.
Penny is survived by her husband of 22 years David Karlin, son Steven, and daughter Alyssa, her mother and stepfather Ginny and Don Dalessi, father Jack Smith, and grandmother, Helen Salli. Penny is also survived by her half-sisters Judy and Amy, many aunts and uncles, cousins, a special friend, Lisa Call, her mother-in-law Barbara Karlin, and extended family who lovingly welcomed her when she married David.
Penny was born February 20, 1965 at the US Naval Hospital, Portsmouth, VA. She and her parents moved to California when she was a toddler. She attended schools in Oakland and Livermore and graduated from Cottonwood high school.
Penny and her friend Lisa worked at Johnson Controls Inc. where she met David. Penny's most challenging, but satisfying, job was with the Livermore Police Department, where she supervised ARC (Association for Retarded Citizens) employees who kept the police cars clean. Penny excelled as a mother and homemaker. She was involved in her children's school activities, especially softball where she was Alyssa's team mom and photographer for the last several years. During her free time Penny loved to make scrapbooks for almost any occasion.
Penny and her family cherished their yearly vacation at Stinson Beach where they stayed in the same rental house. She loved taking photos and collecting beach glass.
Penny was a warm, giving person, loved by many, and always helpful to her family and friends. Our lives will not be the same without her.
Family and friends are invited to a Memorial Service and Celebration of Penny's Life Saturday June 29, 2013 at 11:00 AM in Berge-Pappas-Smth Chapel of the Angels, 40842 Fremont Blvd. Fremont CA.
The family prefers remembrances in her memory to the Brain Support Network, P.O. Box 7264, Menlo Park, CA 94026.
Penny was a very kind and loving niece.
I will miss her beautiful smile and laugh.
I am so sad you have left us but I know Granny and Grandpa are taking care of you
Love always
I have such good memories of us doing things together. I am so grateful that I was able to see you in May. Wished that we had more time together. Life gets so busy that we just don’t have time. You will forever be loved and missed.
My dearest loving friend, I never imagined that I would loose you so soon. We have been friends since childhood, over 30 years. There are so many experiences in life that we got to do together and I will never forget them. Thank you for making me a part of your family and for all the years of love and laughter. My life was better because of you. I will miss you greatly. Love, BFF

Love always Aunt Donna
Penny was always the leader to me and her cousins growing up. The vision I will always have of Penny dating back to when were were kids was her beautiful blonde hair blowing in the wind which portrayed an atmosphere that she was your friend before she even met you. You will be deeply missed and please watch over us as I know you will.
