Rogelio Pagilagan Alaura

Rogelio Pagilagan Alaura, born on August 15, 1952, in Quezon City, Philippines, peacefully passed away on June 21, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. He was the son of Rodrigo Alaura and Petra Pagilagan and grew up in Mandaluyong City, Metro Manila, as the fourth of five siblings.

Rogelio attended Don Bosco School, where he showcased his athletic abilities as a varsity soccer player and swimmer.

In 1968, Rogelio immigrated to the United States and completed his high school education at Monterey High School. He continued his studies at Monterey Peninsula Junior College before joining the U.S. Navy in 1972.

Rogelio served on the USS Charles R. Ware DD865. His ship was the first to respond to a tragic incident on December 19, 1972, when the South Korean supertanker Sea Star collided with the Brazilian tanker Horta Barbosa. Rogelio’s naval adventures allowed him to cross the equator multiple times, sail through a hurricane, and swim through the international dateline.

In recognition of his service and bravery, Rogelio was awarded the National Defense Service Medal for active combat engagement with rebel gun emplacements while passing through the Straits of Hormuz.

After his Honorable Discharge, Rogelio began his professional career in the mailroom at PG&E. He steadily climbed the corporate ladder and retired as a Supervisor in 2010, after 35 years of service.

One of Rogelio’s passions was restoring old cars. He took pride in his collection, which included a 1972 Porsche 914 and a 1972 Volkswagen Bus. He also enjoyed music, particularly The Beatles, Bee-Gees, Eagles and more.

During his retirement, Rogelio explored many countries and states across the U.S. With his children and grandchildren, he embarked on road trips to Yosemite, Los Angeles, and Seaside. Additionally, Rogelio made frequent trips back to the Philippines, living in the dream home he designed and built in Cebu.

Rogelio was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers Daniel (Esther), Rodrigo, and Jesus (Judy). He is survived by his children Brian (Claire), Alona (Reinel), and Angelinah, as well as his grandchildren Elan, Lucca, Rowan, Mateo, and Camilla. He is also survived by his sister Leah Alaura-Malinis and numerous loving nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews.

Rogelio will be fondly remembered for his adventurous spirit, dedication to his family, and unwavering love for cars. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
