Roma Pauline Dalton Whitehead
Mom was born on January 2, 1924, in Grace, Idaho, to George Matthew and Hazel Pauline Dalton. She was the oldest of five children. She was followed by Marlin George, Dorothy Justine, John Frederick (better known as Jay) and Dallas Korth. They all grew up on a dairy farm in Grace, and mom started piano lessons at an early age. She spent most of her life playing the piano or organ at countless church meetings and accompanying choirs and singers barely having to look at the music most of the time. She also played in dance bands in her youth. She had an unfortunate accident at the age of ten and broke her leg very badly. It bothered her all of her life, but she never let it slow her down. She was a drum majorette at Grace High School, and rode her bike everywhere well into her 80's. After high school, she and her best friend, Earlene Whitehead, moved to Salt Lake City to live and work. There she attended LDS Business College and graduated from there. Several years later, Earlene's brother, Boyd, returned from World War II and also eventually moved to Salt Lake City. Mom had known him in passing when she was younger, as they grew up just a couple of miles apart on the same road. Since he was a year younger, she didn't have much to do with him. However, he and his friends infiltrated her circle of friends in Salt Lake, and they all dated one another. Eventually 'she got me' as Dad said. They later moved into a little house in the Glendale neighborhood of Salt Lake, where two children were born: Carol first and then Blake 2 1/2 years later. Mom lived there until 1967, when Boyd was transferred to California. They lived in Concord for two years, then moved to Fremont, to the house where they spent the rest of their lives. Mom spent her life in the service of others, taking care of her home and her family, kids and grandkids, pets, neighbors, friends, and anybody that needed it. She did beautiful sewing and needlework, often making many beautiful calendars for family and friends to enjoy for the entire upcoming year. Her cooking was legendary, and everyone loved invitations to dinner at Boyd and Roma's. She hosted birthday parties for her grandkids and loved going on field trips at school with them. She loved music and movies, the San Francisco 49ers and the Oakland A's, and she hated TV weathermen. She was the best example of Christ-like living and serving others that we know. She passed away January 27, 2017, at the age of 93, survived by her husband, her children. Carol and Blake, her sister Dorothy and brother Dallas, six grandchildren and a host of people who loved her.
