Salvatore Joseph Lamagna

Salvatore “Sal” Lamagna, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, passed away surrounded by his family. His life was defined by hard work, service, kindness, and an unwavering commitment to those he loved. Born and raised in San Francisco, California, Sal graduated from Galileo High School.

As a young man, he proudly served in the National Guard and was a Golden Gloves boxer, demonstrating the determination and discipline that would characterize his life. In 1965, Sal and his beloved wife, Gail Penaska, made their home in Fremont, where they built a beautiful life together. They shared 67 wonderful years of marriage, creating a legacy centered on love, family, and enduring devotion.

While attending Ohlone College, Chabot College, and the University of San Francisco (USF), Sal pursued his education as he established a remarkable 46-year career with Borden Chemicals. His dedication and strong work ethic earned the respect of colleagues and friends alike. Sal found his greatest joy in spending time with his family. He loved traveling, playing golf, serving as a marshal at Sunol Golf Course until its closure, and dancing whenever he had the opportunity. He was also passionate about giving back to his community, coaching CYO youth basketball and FALL baseball. The many young athletes he mentored remember him not only as a coach but as a positive influence in their lives.

He is lovingly survived by his wife, Gail; his children, Debbie Jackson (John), Sal Lamagna Jr. (Ronda), and Dana Piper (Bill); eight grandchildren, Tawnya Rhib, Amanda Lee, Ashley Scalzo, Blaine Piper, Kalli Piper, Tayler Irwin, Shane Lamagna, and the late Megan Greco; and thirteen great-grandchildren: Piper, Gianna, Rowen, Avery, Kielle, Isabella, Killian, Cash, Kaden, Giuliana, Maverick, Cruz, and Levi; and his
cousin Father Jerry Wade. He also leaves behind many cherished extended family
members and lifelong friends whose lives were enriched by knowing him. Sal was preceded in death by his parents, Giuseppe and Esther Lamagna; his brother, Bill Lamagna; and his beloved granddaughter, Megan Greco.

Sal will be remembered for his unwavering dedication to his family, his generosity of spirit, and the lasting friendships he built throughout his life. His kindness, sense of humor, and love for those around him will continue to inspire all who knew him. Though he will be deeply missed, his legacy lives on in the family he treasured and the countless lives he touched.
