S.R. 'Huf' Hufstedler of Fremont CA passed away at Washington Hospital in Fremont on Thursday evening, July 16, after a long struggle with lung disease. He was 81 years old. Born in 1934, Huf was a graduate of Clinton MO High School in 1952. He then joined the US Air Force, where he taught airmen about radar technology. After completion of his stint in the service he joined IBM and became a customer engineer, as mainframe computer repairmen were then called. He remained with IBM his entire career of 38 years, where he eventually enjoyed a renewed career as a technical writer. His work took him to several cities around the Midwest, to Rochester MN and finally to Palo Alto, CA. He retired in 1991, after serving 35 years. He moved to Fremont in 1977. Ron (as he was often called by his family) cultivated a number of hobbies. Chief among these in recent years was a daily regimen of exercise, in an impressive effort to regain his failing health. Other interests included repairing old mantle clocks, creating stained glass art, and collecting beer steins. He was also a bird enthusiast and an aficionado of Dixieland jazz. For several years, he volunteered his time at Washington Hospital as volunteer and Better Breathers newsletter editor. But his chief passion in his later years was creating and maintaining a vast database on the Hufstedler and Dimmels, along with their many allied families. He meticulously tracked births, deaths and marriages of thousands of cousins and ancestors, dating back centuries. For many years, he looked forward to annual family reunions in Missouri. Ron's first marriage to Audrey Hendricks ended in divorce; Ron and Katherine F. Dimmel were married in 1963, a marriage that would last 52 years. Two brothers survive: Thomas Glore Hufstedler of Las Vegas NV, and Paul D. Hufstedler of South San Francisco CA. Ron had 3 children, Cynthia Ann (Wayne) Hoffmann of Winston-Salem NC, and Sherri Lea Hufstedler of Topeka, KS, who preceded him in death earlier this year, and John Mark (Kathy Ney) Hufstedler of Rochester MN. He also leaves seven grandchildren and step grandchildren, plus five great grandchildren. Family and friends are invited to attend a Memorial Service on Tuesday, July 21, 2015 at 11:00 A.M. The service will be held at Berge-Pappas-Smith Chapel of the Angels, 40842 Fremont Blvd., Fremont, CA.

  1. One of the finest guys I met in IBM. Always a smile. Usually left me laughing. Wonder whom he left his gloves to. His passing is the only time he did not make me feel better about my day. Condolences to his extended family, and particularly to Kay.
