Scott Campbell

scott campbell

August 20, 1951 ~ October 23, 2022

Born in: San Diego, California
Resided in: Redwood City, California

Scott Campbell passed unexpectedly on October 23rd, 2022 as a result of Cardiac Arrest while biking his favorite route up Farm Hill Rd. Scott was born on August 20th 1951 and has now joined his late parents Jack and Sue Campbell and brothers Kurt and Randy Campbell.
Scott is survived by his son Cody Campbell, sister Debbie Benson, husband Rip Benson, nephew Seth Benson, niece Teagan Darnell, husband Nathan and their sons Anders and Lochlan.
Scott had a wonderful, fun career as a Firefighter for Woodside Fire Protection District, April 2nd 1979 retiring June 16th 2002. Scott was so proud that his son Cody followed in his footsteps and is now a Firefighter at the Fire Department he retired out of.

Scott loved being in the water. He was a water skier, avid surfer and as of late, paddle boarder. He absolutely loved to paint. Most reading this probably have a car, motorcycle, boat, kids’ cars/bikes, helmets, fire trucks, etc. that he painted for you. He was a Hot Rod enthusiast with about 20 cars of his own that he restored & painted over the years. Scott’s personality was larger than life! He had the ability to make everyone he spoke to feel as if they were the most important person in the world. He especially loved to talk with older ones and children, always kneeling to talk with them. He loved to tell stories and had a “colorful” way to tell them. He loved to make us laugh. We wish we could list all of his closest friends but we know, you know who you are. Decades of close friendships were formed and so many of you, whether you saw him the night before or 20 years ago were dearly loved by him.

Family was most important to Scott. He loved his mother deeply, she was his true love. They had a bond that was priceless through thick and thin. His dad Jack taught him everything he knew about being a good man, by his wonderful example. Scott loved the gin fizzes his dad made every Easter Sunday. He memorialized his brothers in many ways to keep them close to his heart, rarely did a day go by that he didn’t say something about them. He loved his sister for her loving direction and that she honored their mother’s family holiday traditions. He was so proud of the wonderful young adults his niece & nephew became and adored his great-nephews, who laughed every time he did his duck voice.
And Cody; his legacy, his pride & joy, his buddy, his confidant, the one person he loved as much as his mom. Scott poured every breath into doing what he felt best for his son and without question while he was riding up Farm Hill, Scotts last thoughts were of how wonderful and proud he was of his son.

Scott would only want you to remember the good times, the laughter, and the music. He wouldn’t want you to mourn him in death, he would want you to celebrate his life!

  9. CandleScott, may you rest in peace after a life devoted to public service. The world is a better place because you were in it.

  10. We met Scott when he was just a young boy. He was working at B&W market. He was an example of fine upbringing, always manerly, kind and loving. We really loved Scott, as many people did. We hope to see him right here on the earth in the new world. He will be able to enjoy the ocean again. He was a fine person.

  11. My family met Scott while our daughters attended Roy Cloud school. There are so many fond memories of how involved Scott was with his son Cody as well as all of the students & parents. Everyone loved this amazing and talented man! So genuine, epic energy and pure love for life. Scott was my neighbor and everytime Id drive down Jefferson past his house, He would smile & wave. He touched so many lives and I’m a better person for knowing him. My next race in Santa Cruz (Surfers Path) will be dedicated in his memory. Our hearts and prayers to Cody and everyone whos life he touched. Enjoy riding the big waves in heaven my friend. You will be greatly missed ❤️

  12. CandleRest in Peace Scott. You will be missed so very much. I still picture being in your home next-door to be B&W market and making spaghetti for you and the guys while you’re painting your car. I’m glad we talked over the phone a few months ago, it was good to hear your voice, and I never thought it would be the last time. I will miss you, Scott and thank you for being you.

  13. CandleEveryone knew Scott. He was larger than life, if there was anyone that represented Redwood City best, it was him. When I first met him personally in 1978, he was working at the local B&W Market. B&W had a community billboard that just about everyone posted on. I had prepared a flyer to post to sell my Camaro. I walked in one night and there he was standing at the cash register. I nervously asked if I could post it. He took a look at the flyer and said “Ah Man! Is that your car? I see that all over town. Its Bad Ass!”

Needless to say, I felt euphoric. This legend had actually admired what I had done. He said “You want to sell that car, park it in front of my house next door”. Everyday before going to school and work, I dropped my car at his house and returned at night to pick it up. Before I knew it I was hanging at the bachelor pad and weight lifting at the gym with him and his buddies. It was such a fantastic time in my life, that I’ll never forget. Thank you Scott, I’ll never forget how you made me feel and the times together.

  14. Scott my brother, I can’t believe it, say it isn’t so. Meeting you at 17 years old, you taking me under your wing being my big brother, sometimes father! All the fun and laughs we had, lifting all those weights, water skiing, teaching me how to tape off cars before you painted them. Most importantly you helped mold me into the man I am today. I owe to you my career as a Firefighter! Love you Scott, buffos forever ❤

  15. I first met Scott at B&W market, all of the Moms were hoping handsome, hunky Scott would carry the groceries to their cars! Larry first met Scott many years ago when he owned Five Point Tires. He did artwork for us, we hired his band for a party, and he always made us laugh. He was a good guy, and a legend in Redwood City!

Cody, he was so proud of you!

  16. Uncle Scott.. the man who I’m named after, the model for my life of health/fitness and the reason I’m a firefighter. You’ve been one of the biggest influences in my life and I’m better man for it. I love you bubba, see ya on the other side.

  17. I am so sorry to get the news about Scooter. He certainly was a man of many talents! Always positive, happy, humorous and willing to lend a hand, this world is a poorer place with his passing.

  18. When I learned of Scotty’s unexpected passing, I realized not only the loss of a good friend, but all of us who worked for Dennis Nelson and trained at the health club during the 70’s and 80’s share the loss of one of our own. He was more than a friend, but rather a “compadre” who shared a rite of passage with us during one of the best and most formative times of our lives.
Strangely enough, while it had been years since I’d last seen him, we saw Scott at a funeral only weeks ago. Same Scott, nothing changed. Seeing him, we picked up wherever we might have left off as if it were yesterday. This always was typical of friendships Scott made.
In the 70’s, while we were figuring out what to do with our lives, we worked for Dennis Nelson as members of a group of part-time trainers during that short period that came to be known as the “Golden Era of Bodybuilding” when weight training “neared critical mass, swirled in its growing energy” and became legitimized by attracting spectators to the sport. This brief, crazy fun period in our lives can never be replicated to create the same close bond that developed between all of us who worked and trained together back in the day when “everything was new, young, alive, untainted, unworn and unexploited.” We’d instruct club members, and between times train together as a group for a couple of hours, pile everyone into someone’s car afterward and head for “King’s Table” where we’d regularly eat enough to convince the owner that advertising “all you can eat” was a error in judgment. Scotty, of course, was central in all these festivities.
Good equipment, good people, good humor (good gyms always had some of the funniest people you’ll ever know; Scotty being one of the funniest at Nelson’s.) Above all, people who frequent a gym have to give it the “right feel” – leading to a sense of inevitability in what you were doing that made you believe while you were there, that there was nothing in life so worthwhile or fun, or exciting you could be doing. This “right feel” was something Scott translated into everything he did, and surely it accounted for his later success as a firefighter.
Any of us left that remember the “old days” at Dennis Nelson’s will recognize how few gentleman like Scott there are that we are still blessed to have with us. We need more.
    Scotty you’ll be missed.
Mike Wilson (for all your old friends and compadres from Dennis Nelson’s)

  19. CandleWow, Scott is definitely lighting it up, upstairs! I’d only known him for a short time – as his insurance Agent. Luckily for me he was old school, like me, and wanted to come into the office to introduce himself and talk business. We did, for about 10 minutes, and after that it was all surfing…the stories he had. And of course, Cody, Cody Cody. You all were so lucky to know this loving, funny, happy, crazy, and talented man. And I am blessed to have been touched by him as well. My next wave is for you SurferBoy. Much love to Cody and his family. XOXO SurferGirl

  20. CandleRIP My Dear friend, you made a room light up with your love and kindness. I met you when I was in 7th grade, when you would pick Debbie up from school, and would give me a ride home as well… from there grew a wonderful life long friendship ❤️
You were always there to bring joy and laughter.
There’s a place in hearts where you will always be.
See you in the 🌞 sun.
God has you with your family, I’m sure its a grand reunion.
    ❤️

  21. My name is Robin Cunha I have known Scott since he was a young boy my husband and I lived down the street from him in San Carlos every night at six o’clock
He would knock on the door and I would yell to my husband the little kid from up the street is here then we ate dinner then they would go and work on the hot rod cars this went on for about five years
Augie and I moved away when we divorced I moved back to Redwood City
I went to the b and w market where he was working. Boy had he grown up. He came over all the time. His band played many times for me He came to the July fourth block parties.
He was a mentor to my daughter Alden.
He was one of the good guys. We will always miss him.

  22. CandleScott was the guy you wanted to be like. Fun, Caring, Creative, and someone that just enjoyed life… He took the time to teach me how to surf down south, I got a little burnt but survived. He had some great get togethers at his place. He was a joy to run into and always and I say always had a smile on his face and something to make you laugh. He painted my daughters first tricycle so it would look cool… He loved his animals, and they could do no wrong… 50+ years of great memories, too many to list… such a sad day but the memories bring a smile to my face and warms my heart…

  23. CandleScotty, I can’t believe this is happening. What a man, what a mentor, what a light!!! Scott was one of the good ones, for sure. That doesn’t do justice, because he was so much more. He cared about people, made everyone feel like they belonged right where they were standing, at that very point in time, and he did it so effortlessly, he was just so sincere. There were few that had his charisma and ability to connect so genuinely to everyone who he crossed paths with.

To Scott, I remember meeting you, larger than life. We shared the fire thing, but it was working out at Gold’s Gym, the hot rods, just hanging out, and the painting that made it so personal. I can still hear you telling me I needed to go to work for Disney, but I had job and never felt my talent was worthy of your words, nor was it anywhere near yours. You gave me someone to look up to, a true mentor, and a friend. It breaks my heart that you have ended your time on this rock. You will be dearly missed, my friend, and never forgotten. Godspeed on your new journey!

  24. CandleIt was a unique privilege to have known and worked so close with Scotty over the years. His wit and humor, and sincere concern for the community where he lived and served, and the people he worked with was always and true inspiration.

My sincerest condolence to to all of us who knew him and loved him. You will never be forgotten. Rest well my friend!

  25. CandleRest in peace now Scott/brother! You were so loved by my family/Artie (fish)Thal. I was so glad and happy when you were hired on at Woodside Fire. So many great memories and of course at all the car shows “Baby”! You will be so missed. Best wishes Cody and your career at Woodside Fire. Brother love,
    David L Thal

  26. Scotty, dear friend, can’t believe you were taken from us decades to soon. For the past 45 years our families had many great times together. Waterskiing through the sloughs of Redwood City,Lake Shasta and everywhere in between . The surfing trip to SoCal with your faithful pooches
Rowdy and Primo. Easter with the families and your dads famous gin fizzes. To many great times to cover . B&W cashier, artist, muscle beach, firefighter, surfer , waterskier. A man of many talents. Until we meet again , wherever you are up there you know surfs up. 🤙

  27. Scott you had such were always such a positive influence on my son Justin. He looked to you for advice and thought the world of you. Thank you for always being so good to him and giving him such great fatherly advice. You will be missed 💔

  28. I met Scott at Powerhouse Gym. As a new employee I didn’t know many people. He was one of the first to come up and introduce himself and make me feel comfortable. His positive nature and joy for life we so apparent everyday. He turned into a friend quickly and someone I always looked forward to hashing things out with. What an amazing personality and zest for life. I’m certain he was always the most interesting and engaging person to talk with anywhere he went. Scott you will be missed. Thanks for your time, it was a pleasure knowing you. You are an inspiration for how to treat people. Rest In Peace my friend 🙏🙏

  29. CandleIt was such an incredible shock to hear about Scott. I worked with him for approximately 20 years and have many many stories. One: I needed my daughters bedroom furniture painted but didn’t have a lot of money so I asked Scott if he would barter. I made him several Hawaiian shirts custom to his build. The trip to The material store was hysterically funny. I want you to know that my daughter grew up with that painted furniture and then my granddaughter grew up with it and I think it’s still in their home. Scott left many treasures for many people. He will certainly be missed. You were all in my prayers and thoughts.

  30. CandleRest In Peace Scott. Your legacy will live on. I remember you from your B&W days as my family lived across the street from the market. Of course all my girl friends who came over to my house had to make a trip to the m area to buy something and make goo goo eyes at you. You were always kind to those that made sure they were in your check out line. I’m sorry i could not make your service. I did watch it on you tube and sent you a loving prayer. You will be missed.

  31. CandleScott.
I will always remember you as this larger than life hulk. To a kid you would be. You had bad ass cars especially that red split window corvette. I remember you let my mom (Terry) borrow it to pick me up from elementary school, it was a special day. Rest in peace Scott. Know that you will live on in many peoples fond memories.

  32. Scott, Big Daddy, neighbor, Brotha,
How am I supposed to drive by your house all the time and not get that big bear claw of a wave from you again?! That was the highlight of my drive up Jefferson Blvd on my way home! Now your windows are dark and you are gone. However I know you are lighting up the place you are now! I’m glad we had that conversation about life and the very same thing that just happened! But it wasn’t suppose to go this way.
You are missed and were sent off in class my man. You have many friends! Shred some curls for me..!

  33. We dated in the early 70’s and you have held a special place in my heart. Quite a shock to hear of your passing many decades later. I’ll always remember your kindness and your bright and shiny freshly waxed red Chevy! Sweet dreams…

  34. We dated in the early 70’s and you have held a special place in my heart. Quite a shock to hear of your passing many decades later. I’ll always remember your kindness and your bright and shiny freshly waxed red Chevy!

  35. CandleRest in peace dear Scott. Just heard the sad news. You were always fun to hang around, always looking at the positive things in life. You were a really great guy!

  36. I knew of Scott for years and would see him outside of his house on Jefferson Ave. when I would drive my hotrod past his house. One day I was at the Sequoia High School hotrod car show I think it was around 2012 and my brother was friends with him so as I was walking around eyeballing those cool machines my brother brought him over to me to personally introduce us. Well I really didn’t get one of those warm welcomes that everybody is talking about here on this memorial site all I got was a quite stare, no hand shake or hello just a strange odd stare, very strange! I’m just wounding why such a guy like Scott would die while riding his bike and being in great physical condition as he was? my thinking is maybe like so many athletes around the world and in America like the football player Damar Hamlin that collapsed on the football field, did Scott take the covid vaccine shots that resulted in his death? this is being reported thousands of cases of deaths from myocarditis after covid injections. Here in this web address you will find the evidence that I would wake people up. https://covid19reporter.com/new-pandemic-vaxxed-athletes-dying-of-heart-attacks/

  37. I worked with Scotty for many many years as a brother firefighter at Woodside Fire Protection District before eventually transferring to the Palo Alto Fire Department after 14 years with Woodside. When I first met him I thought I was in pretty good shape until he came around the corner of our Headquarters on Woodside Rd. Then I realized that I was lacking in the big muscle category 😊. Scotty was by far a super good guy, funny, easy going, someone you could talk to and very smart. He honored our badge by being a good firefighter working as a team and knowing when it was necessary to get the job done when the bells rang. He gave back to our Department in many ways but I think the best were his Christmas figures that we placed on our Headquarters roof every Christmas. Beautifully painted in bright Christmas colors. Every once in while when I was in his hood I’d stop by to say hi.
I’m sorry to say that I was unaware of his passing until this evening July 11th 2023.
Scotty and I would talk about family and kids, happy times and sad times. I shall miss you Scott Campbell. May your next life be happy and full of laughter.
