Sister John Martin Fixa, O.P. passed away on October 27, 2018. Fondly known as “Sister Johnnie” she was born on May 9, 1940. A native San Franciscan, Sister Johnnie attended St. James School and Immaculate Conception Academy. She entered the Dominican Sisters of Mission San Jose in 1960. Sister Johnnie began her teaching career in 1962 and taught every grade except kindergarten and high school freshmen. Among her assignments were St. Elizabeth High School from 1971 to 1976 and Principal of Immaculate Conception Academy (now ICA Cristo Rey Academy) 1976-1990. Following her principalship, she began the Dominican Sisters Office of School Development. In 1995, Sister Johnnie founded Dominican Sisters Vision of Hope. Through her bold leadership and passion for Catholic education, Vision of Hope has become a national model for funding urban Catholic elementary schools. Some of her happiest times were celebrating with her former students and her Sisters. She also enjoyed reading, gardening, dancing and parties. Sister Johnnie touched so many lives and will be greatly missed. We will celebrate the life of Sister Johnnie with the following services: Friday, November 2nd at 2:30 pm Rosary and sharing of memories in the Dominican Sisters Motherhouse Chapel, 43326 Mission Circle, Fremont followed by light refreshments. Saturday, November 3rd, 10:00 am Mass of Resurrection at St. Joseph Church, 43148 Mission Blvd, Fremont, California with the burial in God’s Acre immediately after Mass. Lunch at the Dominican Sisters Motherhouse following the burial. People will be available to direct you to available parking on November 3.
