Sister Mary Bertha Rehers Resident of Fremont Sister Mary Bertha Rehers died on Monday, January 20, 2014 at Saint Martin's Residence at the Dominican Sisters' Motherhouse in Fremont, CA. She was 100 years old. Born on June 28, 1913 in Los Angeles, California, Sister Mary Bertha was a Dominican Sister for 78 years. Her principal active ministry was music education which brought her to the following assignments: Saint Boniface School of Music, Anaheim; Immaculate Conception Academy, San Francisco; Saint Michael School, Los Angeles; Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy, Pasadena; and Dominican Sisters Motherhouse, Fremont where she opened the School of Music in 1964 as an active department of Queen of the Holy Rosary College. For the next 30 years Sister Mary Bertha taught music full or part-time as well as served in community leadership and contributed to crafts for the Sisters' boutique and other projects. In 2007 Sister's final ministry became that of prayer. Sister Mary Bertha is survived by family members, her two sisters, Mrs. Dorothy Rahm, Mrs. Marcella McBride and their families, as well as by many students, friends and the Dominican Sisters of Mission San Jose. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, January 25, 2014 at 11:30 a.m. at the Dominican Sisters' Chapel, 43326 Mission Blvd, Fremont, CA. Burial in God's Acre, the Dominican Sisters Cemetery, will follow the Mass. Memorials may be made to the New Building Fund or the Dominican Sisters Retirement Fund or the Mother Pia Backes Education Fund, 43326 Mission Blvd, Fremont Ca 94539 or the Vision of Hope Fund, 1555 – 34th Ave., Oakland, CA 94612.
