Stephen Frederick Anderson passed away on October 6th at his home in Castro Valley. He is survived by his son, Gene, the mother of his son, Jacqueline, his siblings and their spouses, Bradford & Kimberley Anderson, Bronna & Kendrick Lawrence, and Mitchell & Juliette Anderson, as well as his 9 nieces and nephews. Born in Iowa City, IA on March 12, 1948, he soon moved to Fremont in 1953 with his parents, Dr. Conrad E. and Virginia Anderson. He graduated from Mission San Jose High School in 1966, where he swam competitively and held the school record for the butterfly stroke for several years afterwards. Steve enlisted in the US Army in 1968, trained in the 82nd Airborne at Fort Benning, GA and later was a Green Beret stationed at Fort Gulick, with the 8th Special Forces Group in Panama. While there, he specialized in underwater demolitions, helping to prevent damage to the locks on the Panama Canal by disarming bombs placed by Panamanian nationalist groups. Steve returned to Fremont after serving 3 years and soon met and married Jacqueline Cowardin in 1971. Their son, Gene, was born in 1977. Steve worked in construction, mainly framing and later in hazardous materials handling, from the mid-1970’s until he retired in the mid-2000’s. Steve spent his remaining years providing comfort to his parents before they passed. Memorial services will be held on October 25th at 10:30 at Berge Pappas Smith Chapel of the Angels 40842 Fremont Blvd., Fremont, CA.

  1. Steve was a good man and a highly skilled soldier with whom I served in the 8th Special Forces Group in 1968-69. I only recently decided to look up some old friends and ran across his obituary.
