Stephen Gallagher, a loving and devoted husband, an inspiring and generous father, a proud and caring grandfather, a sweet and gentle great-grandfather and a passionate and enlightening teacher to all, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his family on August 28, 2016.
Born in San Francisco on Dec. 7, 1934, he grew up playing baseball in the streets and in Golden Gate Park. Music filled his childhood home where he and his brothers would play guitars and ukuleles as his mother led them in song.
The most precious memory of his youth was meeting Patricia, the beautiful girl who moved into his neighborhood. He adored her and she became his one and only love. He earned his degree in English at USF and completed his teaching credential.
He married Patricia on May 7, 1960 and their love for each other has been an inspiration to all. They raised six children in Fremont where Steve taught English at Washington High School for over 30 years. Their family continues to expand with 14 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.
Throughout the years, Steve has shared his passion for music, literature, poetry, progressive politics and the Giants. His deep faith and passion for social justice were the seeds in the formation of the Fremont Catholic Community. His life was devoted to family, faith and fighting for a more peaceful and just world.
Family and friends are invited to the Memorial Mass and Celebration of his Life on Sat., Sept. 17, 2016 at 11:00 am at the Olive Hyde Art Gallery Community Center, 123 Washington Blvd., Fremont.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to picocalifornia.org (PICO: People Improving Communities through Organizing)
